Company Description Vattenfall is a leading European energy company serving approximately 12 million customers and employing around 21,000 people. We believe there is a way to build a future where everyone can choose fossil-free ways to move, make, and live. Job Description Are you a student looking to apply your knowledge to real-world solutions that support the energy transition? With us, you will have the opportunity to complete your thesis project close to the business, working alongside experienced specialists and tackling challenges where your ideas and perspectives can make a real difference. Vattenfall R&D is responsible for conducting business driven technical development that creates value for the company and helps us realise our strategy. We develop cost-effective, safe and sustainable solutions to improve the infrastructure of Vattenfall assets including but not limited to Hydro, Wind, Nuclear, SKB, Heat, and Distribution. The rapid development of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital services is increasing both the number and capacity of data centres. These facilities may become significant electricity consumers with load characteristics that differ from conventional industrial demand due to power-electronic equipment, rapid workload variations, cooling systems, uninterruptible power supplies, and energy storage. This thesis will investigate the integration of data centres into the Swedish electricity system. The initial phase will review available public and industrial data, data-centre electrical architectures, load profiles, modelling methods, and relevant flexibility opportunities. Based on the findings and data availability, the study will define and investigate one or more representative use cases. Potential research directions include: Characterization and modelling of data-centre electricity demand Interaction between data centres and the electricity grid Assessment of available workload, power, and facility-level datasets Evaluation of data-centre flexibility through workload management or energy storage Participation in electricity, congestion-management, or flexibility markets Development of Python-based models or simulations in energy modelling software The goals and purpose of this thesis work are: Literature and technology review Assessment of public and potentially available industrial datasets Definition of representative data-centre use cases Development of an appropriate modelling or optimisation framework Scenario and sensitivity analysis Evaluation of limitations, uncertainties, and future data requirements This assignment is for 1 student. Thesis work - Impact of aggregated plug-in household solar PV
Företagsbeskrivning Vattenfall is a leading European energy company serving approximately 12 million customers and employing around 21,000 people. We develop cost effective, safe and sustainable solutions to improve the infrastructure of Vattenfall assets including Hydro, Wind, Nuclear, SKB, Heat, and Distribution. The connection of plug-in household PV systems and balcony solar installations has increased in recent years across many European countries, where approximately 780,000 installations have been registered. These systems typically consist of one or a few solar panels connected to the grid through a microinverter, which is then plugged directly into a customer's electrical outlet. Although the individually connected power per customer is relatively low, widespread adoption can result in a significant amount of aggregated generation. Especially in densely populated areas, the combined production from many small-scale resources could potentially lead to power flow issues, voltage variations, instability due to unbalanced loads, and other adverse effects on the power grid. This raises the question: what impact will the connection of plug-in household solar panels have on low- and medium-voltage grids? This is the question that this thesis aims to answer. This thesis will investigate questions such as: At what penetration level of household PV systems does grid instability occur? What effects can these installations have on both the low- and medium-voltage grid? The analysis will be carried out using several methods, including a literature review and grid stability studies conducted in simulation software such as PowerFactory or Simulink. Thesis work - Regulatory and Operational Implications of Moving Inter-Array

We develop cost effective, safe and sustainable solutions to improve the infrastructure of Vattenfall assets including Wind, Hydro, Nuclear, SKB, Heat, and Distribution. Offshore wind farms are continuously increasing in size and generation capacity. As a result, the nominal voltage of inter-array cable systems has evolved from traditional medium-voltage levels to 66 kV in current state-of-the-art designs. With the next generation of offshore wind turbines expected to reach capacities of up to 20 MW, the industry is moving towards 132 kV inter-array cable systems to enable efficient power collection and transmission within wind farms. Inter-array cables are critical assets that connect wind turbines to offshore substations and directly impact the reliability and availability of offshore wind farms. The challenges associated with these installations are significant, particularly due to the need for the highest quality and precision during installation and commissioning. Any cable failure can result in substantial losses from reduced energy production, while locating and repairing faults offshore requires considerable time, cost, and resources. This thesis aims to assess the regulatory and operational implications of operating inter-array cable systems at 132 kV, focusing on the transition from medium-voltage to high-voltage operation in offshore wind farms. The project will provide an overview of the regulatory and operational framework needed for 132 kV inter-array cable systems and support the offshore wind industry in preparing for the next generation of high-capacity wind farm designs.
