Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future. If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match. What do we do in VAS? The DevOps Group within Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) is responsible for the Software Factory and provides Test Automation and Orchestration frameworks that enable efficient software development and validation. We deliver the frameworks, tools, services, and engineering capabilities that allow development and verification teams to build, test, deploy, and operate software efficiently. Our responsibilities span the entire software delivery ecosystem, including source control management, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, container platforms, infrastructure services, test orchestration, and observability solutions. Together, these capabilities form our Software Factory, which accelerates software delivery, improves software quality, increases automation, and promotes DevOps best practices across the organization. Description of the Area As part of our Software Factory, VAS has developed Octopus, an in-house workflow orchestration platform designed to automate and streamline engineering processes across the software development and validation lifecycle. As we evolve from a traditional DevOps organization toward a Platform Engineering operating model, we are exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI), AI Agents, and AIOps can transform platform operations and software delivery. This thesis will investigate how AI-driven capabilities can be integrated into the Octopus platform to enhance automation, operational efficiency, and developer experience. Using Octopus as the experimental environment, the study will evaluate how the role of DevOps engineers may evolve, identify operational activities that can benefit from AI assistance or autonomous execution by AI agents, and determine where human oversight remains essential. The work will also explore governance, reliability, security, compliance, and competency considerations required for the safe and successful adoption of AI-enabled operations. Thesis Description This thesis investigates how AI Agents and AIOps can reshape DevOps practices and accelerate the transition toward Platform Engineering within Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS). Through an industrial case study using the Octopus platform, the research will analyze: How AI impacts the role and responsibilities of DevOps engineers. Which operational activities are suitable for AI-assisted execution. Which activities can be safely automated through autonomous AI agents. Where human decision-making, accountability, and oversight must remain mandatory. The governance, reliability, security, compliance, and operational requirements for AI-enabled platforms. The skills, competencies, and organizational capabilities required for future Platform Engineering teams. The outcome will be an evidence-based adoption framework that provides a structured and low-risk approach for introducing AIOps and AI Agents within VAS. The study will help define how Octopus can evolve from a workflow orchestration platform into an intelligent Platform Engineering capability while maintaining appropriate guardrails, operational control, security, and human accountability. As part of our global and diverse team, you will have the opportunity to work on an industrial research challenge that contributes to the future of safe and sustainable transport. We are looking for a master’s thesis student to investigate how multimodal perception systems can remain reliable when RADAR data is missing or affected by noise. The thesis project Modern 3D object detectors combine information from cameras, LiDAR and RADAR to improve perception performance. However, a detector trained to rely on all three modalities may experience a significant performance drop when RADAR measurements are unavailable. The goal of this thesis is to investigate methods for making multimodal 3D object detection more robust under missing-modality conditions. The project will focus on developing and evaluating a training strategy based on modality dropout or modality-aware learning. You will investigate how the detector performs during normal multimodal operation and when operating with camera data only. You will also study the impact of corrupted RADAR measurements and assess whether robustness to missing RADAR can be improved without compromising normal multimodal performance. The work will include: Designing a suitable training and evaluation strategy. Training and testing the detector under different sensor conditions. Measuring robustness using relevant performance metrics. Analysing the results and documenting your findings in a scientific report. Who are you? You are enrolled in a master’s programme in computer science, data science, machine learning, electrical engineering, robotics or a related field. You have solid Python programming skills and hands-on experience with a deep-learning framework such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. We are looking for someone who is interested in autonomous systems, machine perception and real-world sensor data. You should also be: Independent, structured and curious. Analytical and motivated to solve challenging technical problems. Comfortable working with experimental results and scientific documentation. Proficient in written and spoken English. What’s in it for you? This thesis gives you the opportunity to work on a real industrial research problem with access to unique multimodal vehicle data and the tools needed to conduct advanced experiments. You will receive close technical supervision from experts in AI and autonomous systems and have access to GPU resources for training and evaluation. You will also become part of a dynamic and inclusive work environment where new ideas are encouraged and celebrated. As part of our global and diverse team, you will have the opportunity to work on an industrial research challenge that contributes to the future of safe and reliable autonomous transport. We are looking for a master’s thesis student to investigate how generative AI can improve multimodal sensor fusion and make 3D object detection more robust under adverse conditions and sensor failures. The thesis project Autonomous vehicles rely on multiple sensors, such as cameras, LiDAR and RADAR, to detect and understand their surroundings. Conventional sensor-fusion methods may not fully capture uncertainty or compensate effectively when sensor information is degraded or unavailable. The goal of this thesis is to investigate whether a generative AI-based fusion module can improve the robustness of multimodal 3D object detection. You will evaluate how the proposed approach affects 3D object-detection performance under adverse conditions. You will also investigate whether the system can degrade gracefully when one of the sensors becomes unavailable. The work will include: Implementing a generative sensor-completion mechanism for degraded or missing sensor information. Integrating the completion mechanism with a pretrained bird’s-eye-view object detector. Training and evaluating the system using synchronized LiDAR, camera and RADAR data.
