Thesis project: Reinforcement Learning (RL) for Autonomous Forklift Testing
Are you interested in reinforcement learning, autonomous systems, and finding the limits of intelligent software? At Toyota Material Handling, you will investigate how reinforcement learning can be used to automatically generate challenging test scenarios for autonomous forklift software and discover failures and edge cases more efficiently. In your Master Thesis at Toyota, you will work on: Develop and evaluate a reinforcement learning approach for generating test scenarios for autonomous forklift software. Work with an existing simulation and testing environment and explore how reinforcement learning can interact with it. Define relevant scenario parameters and investigate how the learning process can be guided toward challenging or interesting operating conditions. Compare reinforcement learning with simpler scenario-generation approaches, such as random testing and other search or optimization methods. Analyze discovered failure scenarios and evaluate test coverage, failure discovery rate, and testing efficiency. Investigate whether failure scenarios discovered in simulation can be reproduced and validated on a physical autonomous truck. The thesis will be carried out with support from Toyota Material Handling, including guidance on the existing testing environment, available data, and autopilot system. As this is an exploratory research project, well-founded partial results are considered valuable outcomes, and the goal is not to deliver a production-ready solution. Validation of autonomous forklift software requires testing across a large number of operating conditions. Warehouse layouts, obstacles, pallet locations, vehicle configurations, traffic, and other environmental factors create a scenario space that is difficult to cover through manually designed test cases alone. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether reinforcement learning can be used to intelligently generate test scenarios. Rather than controlling the forklift, the RL agent selects the conditions under which the autonomous forklift is tested. Based on the outcome of previous tests, the agent learns which areas of the scenario space are more likely to expose failures, unexpected behavior, or challenging edge cases. The approach will be evaluated against simpler testing strategies to determine whether reinforcement learning can improve failure discovery, test coverage, or testing efficiency. An important outcome will be an objective assessment of when RL provides value and when simpler approaches may be sufficient. SCOPE 2 persons / 30 ECTS each Requirements: For this master thesis, we are looking for students with following educations or equivalent: M.Sc. in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence or equivalent M.Sc. in Robotics or Autonomous Systems or equivalent M.Sc. in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering field A background in machine learning and reinforcement learning, together with good programming skills, is beneficial. Experience or interest in autonomous systems, optimization, mechanical and electrical knowledge, simulation, or software testing is considered an advantage. Who is Toyota Material Handling? Thesis project: Simulation of hydraulic hose rupture valves
Are you interested in hydraulic simulations at Toyota Material Handling Europe?Your assignment will be to model safety components on forklift trucks in order to minimize testing. In your Master Thesis at Toyota, you will work on: Build a simulation model of a hose rupture valve in an appropriate simulation program. Build a simulation model of a mast in the appropriate simulation program, where the load and mast height can be varied. Validate the model using lab measurements. Background: All today's trucks have a hose rupture valve to prevent the load from falling uncontrollably in the event of a hose rupture. This is a component that must work in all trucks due to safety. Today, these are dimensioned with simple calculations and verification tests. Several iterations of the calculation and testing are performed to ensure good function. The goal with the thesis is to get a good simulation model that can help with dimensioning of new hose rupture valves and finding the worst case for verification tests. The tolerance of the valve should also be taken into account in the simulation. Software engineer with AI experience
PinMeTo helps large multi-location companies manage their business information across hundreds of online services, through a SaaS platform that puts businesses in control of their location data and lets them manage online interactions with customers. Our offering is a set of web applications developed internally by our Product department, headquartered in Malmö, Sweden. As a Software Engineer with AI experience you would join one of our product teams focused on building our agentic AI capabilities. The team consists of a product manager, product designer, and 3 software engineers, all located together and working with a shared goal and focus. The team collaborates to first discover the most valuable opportunities to address, then define, validate, and deliver solutions to them. We're looking to strengthen the team with a software engineer with AI experience who can work across a wide range of problems: software design and planning, system architecture, full stack web application development, agentic AI capabilities, etc. What makes this position interesting? 🏡 Join a great work environment built on people and collaboration - we work together from the office in small teams, with a strong work/life balance and lots of opportunity to learn from a diverse group of colleagues and a culture where helping each other succeed is highly valued. 🌟 You will be part of a team of highly skilled engineers who prioritize working together over someone handing out tasks. This collaborative approach gives everyone on the team the chance to both learn from each other and influence the team. You will have ample opportunity to shape both the team and the work you do, letting you maximize your impact and personal long term growth. 💡 The team is fully responsible for our agentic AI capabilities, from learning about the needs from customers and the market, driving experiments to test different solutions, to building and maintaining highly automated solutions that save our users from manual work. Being part of that whole journey is also where the learning happens. What to expect when joining PinMeTo? 7 days: Your first week will be focused on getting to know your team and our system, setting up your development environment, and pushing your first (small) change to production. Your onboarding buddy and your team will be supporting you from day 1, making sure that you get started as smoothly as possible. 30 days: Continuing in your first month you will focus on learning about our codebase, products, and infrastructure while participating in whatever initiative the team is working on, pair working as much as possible with your teammates to contribute to what is being delivered. During this time we also encourage you to spend time learning the parts of our tech stack that you might not have previous experience with. 90 days: A quarter in you should be able to apply your previous experience to the specific context of your team and what you are working on together, thereby increasing your impact by contributing to everything from technical decisions to how the team works. You will also be able to take ownership of driving larger tasks to completion. 365 days: By this time your contribution to the team is indistinguishable from that of the other software engineers that you work together with. You will have been able to leverage your strengths and experience to become proficient with work that you are used to, and together with the team you will have learned the things that were new to you at the beginning. Is this the role for you? Do you recognize yourself below? We would love to hear from you! 4+ years of professional experience developing and managing B2B SaaS web applications in a cloud environment. At least 1 year experience of building agentic AI capabilities in web applications. Enjoy working with both backend and frontend code, with a strong interest in DevOps and system management. Solid knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, Elm, Elixir, Node.js, AWS, MongoDB, and related web development technologies, as well as AWS Bedrock and other related services and technologies for building AI agents. Proficient user of AI based coding assistants such as Claude, Cursor, or Codex, with experience of optimizing your workflow, creating skills, and other ways to work productively with these tools. Proven experience picking up new technologies, with an adaptable and pragmatic approach to choosing between them. Prefer pair programming and collaborating with your team at the office over working alone at home. Comfortable communicating in English and looking forward to joining a culturally diverse company. Practicalities This is a full time role based in Malmö, Sweden. We have an office first working environment, so we assume you live in or around Malmö or are willing to commute. To promote a healthy work/life balance and professional development, we have: Flexible working hours. One paid hour per week to use for exercise and workout, perfectly paired with your wellness allowance. A learning environment where we have regular hackdays, knowledge sharing forums, workshops, retrospectives, and other opportunities to grow and develop your skills. Interested? Next steps We’re excited to hear about your interest in this role, and look forward to hearing from you! We encourage you to apply sooner rather than later. We go through applications continuously as they come in and are looking to fill the position as soon as we find the right candidate. We look forward to welcoming you to PinMeTo!
