Master Thesis: Recycled aluminium in battery casing application – microstru

This master thesis is part of the Net Zero Impact Innovation-funded BAALSCRAP project (BAttery casings from ALuminum alloys with low carbon emissions produced from SCRAP), which aims to enable the production of battery cell housings from recycled aluminum scrap and thereby support the transition towards a circular and net-zero automotive industry. The project investigates how alloying elements and impurities originating from recycled feedstock affect manufacturing processes and material performance.  The thesis will focus on the relationship between microstructure and weld properties of recycled aluminum alloys for battery casing applications. The work will involve detailed characterization of welds using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with emphasis on precipitates, intermetallic particles, segregation, porosity, cracking, and other welding-related defects. The influence of recycled alloying elements and residual impurities on weld quality and performance will be assessed and correlated with material properties. In addition, property calculations (e.g. crack susceptibility) will be used to predict weld performance as a function of alloy composition. The modeling results will be compared with the experimental observations to improve the understanding of microstructure evolution during welding and to help explain the relationship between alloy chemistry, weld microstructure, and weld performance. Desired Qualifications  We are looking for a highly motivated Master's student in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or a related field. The ideal candidate has an interest in experimental research and materials characterization, with a particular focus on microstructure-property relationships in metallic materials. Experience or coursework in microscopy, welding metallurgy, aluminum alloys, or electron microscopy is advantageous but not required. Additional Information The project is planned to be carried out during the spring semester of 2027 at Swerim in Stockholm. Upon successful completion of the Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits), Swerim will provide a compensation of SEK 50,000. What are we looking for in this specific role? We are currently seeking a Battery Fire Protection Engineering Lead to drive our safety leadership ambitions within the BESS industry. In this role, you will lead our battery fire protection engineering efforts including thermal runaway propagation testing, emergency response procedures, and our system architecture from a fire protection point of view (pressure relief, detection, suppression, etc.). You will work closely with various engineering teams in Volvo Energy as well as other stakeholders to communicate your in-depth knowledge to broader audiences and support us in enhancing our collective understanding of a matter that is key to our product and our organization. Your starting point will be to: Leading our fire protection engineering efforts and being the central driver for achieving our safety leadership ambitions Develop, plan and execute various thermal runaway and propagation tests to verify and validate battery fire protection systems, from cell to system(s) level. Support the leadership team in defining the overall safety goals and objectives for our product range. Engage in and monitor the development of current (e.g. UL9540A, NFPA 855, IEC 62619) and future fire protection standards by actively participating in technical committees. Teach and communicate battery fire protection topics to the engineering team as well as non-engineers. What are the qualifications likely required to be successful? Expert level knowledge of battery fire safety on a holistic level (product, site, personnel) and able to translate their know-how to engineers not familiar with fire safety as well as non-engineers. You have significant hands-on experience in battery thermal runaway and propagation testing on cell, module, pack, and/or installation level. Comfortable planning and organizing the tests as well as preparing a battery pack with thermocouples, heaters, voltage sensors, putting it on fire and doing post-mortem analysis. Below is not required but considered an advantage for the applicant: Experience from battery fire investigations and methods. Experience developing Risk and Hazard Mitigation Assessments and possessing an understanding of current and future fire safety requirements for BESS. Mechanical Engineer for the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter

What you'll do: As a Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the development, procurement, assembly, testing and installation of innovative mechanical structures for the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment, working with advanced materials and challenging structural and thermal requirements. You will help oversee the surface assembly and testing of the 250-tonne detector, including its CO? cooling, dry gas, cabling and fibre services, as well as its installation and commissioning 100 metres underground. Working in a multinational, multidisciplinary team, you will apply your expertise in structural and thermal calculations, finite element analysis and 3D CAD. Your responsibilities: - Coordinate a team of technicians in assembling and testing the steel structures of HGCAL, comprising more than 200 tonnes of steel plates per endcap. - Provide engineering support for all activities at CERN related to the large-scale active detector components, known as "cassettes" (30-60-degree segments of circular structures with diameters of up to 5 m). This will include the cold testing of "electromagnetic cassettes" and their subsequent stacking with lead plates to form the complete electromagnetic endcaps. - Integrate the hadronic cassettes into the steel structures and provide support for their testing. - Integrate the electromagnetic (30 tonnes) and hadronic (200 tonnes) sections, including their cabling and piping, and support subsequent large-scale testing on the surface. - Help oversee the lowering of the HGCAL endcaps into the CMS cavern and their connection to CMS, including the connection and testing of services. Your profile: - Strong track record in planning and coordinating the handling, assembling and testing of large mechanical structures. - Demonstrated experience in performing thermal and structural calculations of complex mechanical structures using finite element analysis. - Demonstrated experience in developing mechanical assemblies using 3D CAD. - Ability to work successfully and efficiently within multinational, multicultural teams of engineers, scientists and technicians would be an advantage. - Master's Degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
